Stitching in Public: Our Favorite Summer Spots to Stitch in Peace

Places around Allegan, Michigan to enjoy knitting & crocheting outdoors!

As summer winds down and August hums its bittersweet tune, there’s still time to savor the golden hours with needles or hook in hand. At The Bear & Fox Yarn Den, we believe stitching is meant to be shared, preferably outdoors, with iced tea nearby and a gentle breeze to keep you company.

If you’re looking for the perfect place to finish that shawl, start a pair of socks, or simply get tangled in some woolly daydreaming, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few of our favorite places around Allegan to knit or crochet in public before summer slips away.

1. Riverfront Boardwalk

There’s nothing like sitting by the water with your WIP. The boardwalk offers shady benches, scenic views of the Kalamazoo River, and plenty of people-watching if your stitch count can handle it. Bonus: no one questions a lap full of yarn when you’re this serene. Walk the 600-foot Riverfront Park and take in the views as you enjoy a picnic or the downtown atmosphere. The park also features a 100-person splash pad, an outdoor fireplace, kinetic sculpture, and river fountains. The centerpiece of the award-winning Riverfront is the historic Iron Bridge, illuminated at night by thousands of LED lights.

2. Mahan Park

Bring a picnic blanket and your project bag—this little green gem offers peaceful shade, summer birdsong, and an excellent excuse to stay in one spot for hours. We highly recommend a lace pattern here, especially if you like frogging to the sound of the gentle water fountains in the adjacent river.

3. Mug Shots Coffeehouse Patio

Grab a cold brew, claim a corner table, and make yourself at home. Mug Shots is one of our go-to places to stitch and sip, and it’s even better with a friend or two. (Fiber friends, that is. Muggles might not understand.) The outside seating area is idyllic with plenty of shade and views of the river.

4. The Den, of course

Any time we are open all are welcome to come and sit and stitch either in the lovely den in the back or up front in our lounge. If you really want to have fun, every Monday evening from 4–8pm, our cozy back room fills with laughter, yarn, and the occasional mild chaos as the Cubs & Kits gather. It’s technically indoors, but it counts—we keep the door open, the light soft, and the company excellent.

5. Your Favorite Spot

We know you’ve got one. Maybe it’s your own back porch, a secret bench near the library, or that little corner of the bookstore where no one bothers you. Wherever it is—take your project, take a deep breath, and make the most of it. Yarn is always better in the wild.
